Acclaimed local theatre company The Hayloft Project is kicking off its 2009 season with two radical contemporary retellings of late 19th century masterpieces at The Meat Market from April 24.

Spring Awakening, named Best Independent Production of 2008 by the Sun Herald, returns to Melbourne after a sell-out season at Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre in July last year. It is joined by 3xSisters, The Hayloft Project’s newest production – a groundbreaking and experimental response to Anton Chekhov’s most popular play.

The Meat Market Project will host an unprecedented night of theatre, both an overview of the Hayloft Project’s innovative body of work and a festival of reinvented European classics.
