Stephen Sondheim’s lyrical musical, A Little Night Music, is based on an Ingmar Bergman film, Smiles of a Summer Night, and includes probably his most famous song, ‘Send in the Clowns’.Following in the vein of its production of My Fair Lady, Opera Australia presents Sondheim in a bid guaranteed to attract audiences who may not want to sit through Wagner or Shostakovich. Three generations gather for a midsummer weekend in Sweden, beneath a sun which never quite sets. As husbands, wives, sons and lovers waltz through the golden night, they make life-changing discoveries. Nancye Hayes and Robert Grubb are reunited for a new production of this delicious mixture of words and music, featuring Sigrid Thornton in her OA debut. A Little Night Music, Opera Australia at the State Theatre, Arts Centre. May 12-30, 2009. Bookings: 1300 136 166 or www.ticketmaster.com.au |
