Avenue Q has everything: sex, cynicism, romance and puppets. It’s a glimpse into the bitter, porn-filled future of the characters of Sesame Street, and it’s damn funny. At first it’s rather unsettling to see a bunch of singing puppets and their puppeteers, and it’s hard to decide whether to look at the human or the puppet; but after around 20 minutes you get so caught up in the story that you stop noticing. The puppeteers themselves are pretty impressive. They manage skilfully to manipulate their puppets while acting and, sometimes, voicing another character. The cast includes several past Play School hosts, which adds to the general hilarity. Many of the characters are recognisably based on Sesame Street characters, such as Cookie Monster (the pervert), Ernie (the messy half of the odd couple) and Bert (the closeted gay republican). Bottom line is: if you want to laugh hysterically for a couple of hours and then walk home humming such classics as ‘It Sucks To Be Me’, ‘Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist’ and ‘The Internet Is For Porn’, this show is for you. It’s definitely for me, and gets 4.5 out of 5 stars. Avenue Q bookings at ticketek.com.au |
