Presenting a typical drag queen performance to the masses means you have to make a few cuts. No “How the fuck are ya’s?” No drink cards for the birthday boys. No explicit prop use while lip synching to ‘Papa Don’t Preach’. Divine Divas, the show that toured regional Victoria, and recently played two dates at Crown Casino, has polished up drag and presented it as female impersonation. Liza, Cher, Madonna, Pink and Shania all put in an appearance in front of rear projections of actual diva footage. Add three sexy dancing boys, and the mixed audience of cashed up twenty-somethings looking for fun, American retirees and local fans, was clapping its hands and singing along. One older lesbian next to us went mental when Cher came out. Adelaide-based promoter Mario Maiolo plans to take the show to Vegas and Lake Tahoe – giving Melbourne/Oz drag a truly international name. |
